If I am right... a 96 winstar would use the older freon and not the type yo can buy in the store. Check this out becasue if you use the newer freon r134a it can mess up your compressor.
I would take it to a garage and get a recharge.

take it to the pro ---my suggestion ....... it costs less to get the pro help than to have to buy a new compressor cause you put a heavy charge of gas into the system ---- the low side is the one that will accept the charge and the dude at the local parts stroe will show you where to connect the gas can hose .. but you need some pro tools and help to avoid to expensive repairs of a mistake

The low pressure line or suction line is always the bigger line.The cap can be black or blue depending on the manufacturer.

It should b a blue cap or smallest valve

Locate your DYRER, usually on the passenger side, this is your low side. The service port is on this line.

there are 2 valves, one with a red cap and one with a black cap, use the black cap to recharge.
