<3 is supposed to be a heart. See, the 3 is the fattish part of the heart and the < is the pointy bottom bit. I hope this helps. Now, may I please have 10 points?

a heart .... If using as a symbol... yes, a heart on it's side :)
or if you really want to be technical...
it stands for "less than 3"
If the point goes to the left it means it less than 3... (gl = goes to left = less than 3.)
& if it points to the right, it's greater than 3... (gr = goes to right = grtr than 3.
