Why would you call her anything other than her name or friend? I am DISABLED in a wheelchair part-time and walk with a cane when I walk and it really irritates me when people refer to me as the handicapped girl or the disabled girl or whatever. I am more than just my disability so respect her for what she is... a friend and a human being.

Her legs may be crippled but she is not. The word "crippled," when used this way is descriptive of an aspect of her body, without being offensive to her as a human being, nor without making assumptions about her drive and ability to perform.

People in such circumstance prefer the term "disabled" or "physically challenged."

"Crippled" developed an unfavorable connotation in the 1940' to 1950's, and we referred to people as "Handicapped." This developed a negative connotation in the 1980's, so we adopted the term "disadvantaged."

Our language evolves, and connotations change with usage. I think many people don't mean to be hurtful when they use these terms. Others are simply uncouth and ill-mannered.

Using the wrong term can be very hurtful. Please try not to be overly sensitive. Above all, continue with your efforts to do regular things.

I have 2 kids in chairs, both young adults. If you must call her anyting but her name, she could be described as disabled or wheelchair dependent. Just keep in mind, she is a person, she may be affected by a disability, but she isn't a disability. She is a person, who is a girl, and she has a name.

I would call her beautiful.

I really had a terrible crush on a beautiful girl that was wheelchair bound in college. We hung out sometimes, but she just couldn't get close to guys. It was really to bad. She was a wonderful lady.

Well she is crippled, but it depends how she feels about the name...I think there are more politically correct terms though.

She is handicapped, disabled, walking challenged.

Sounds a bit offensive. Disabled would be better. Better still try to refer to the girl by her name.

No, it is insensitive. Why not look beyond the fact she uses a wheelchair, and just use her name.

Current "lingo" if you will is differently abled and or the standard disabled is fine.
I currently work with adults who have acquired disabilities - they werent born with their limitations & they prefer disabled.
