Democracy is asking for trouble. Its goal is to put the power in the hands of the people, and as anyone who has a decent grasp on things knows...people don't know the first thing about what's best for them.

The litany of books that has been written about the ridiculousness of the Bush years would fill many a small town library. Similar horrors have happened before and likely will again. A certain political scientist that I know has lots of information in support of a theory that public opinion (and thereby political power) seems to swing back and forth on a very predicable cycle.

If this theory, or any indication of anything else in the political climate, holds true, we will have a Democratic president in 2009. This will bring us a couple steps closer to sanity, but I'm not sure that the United States, or Democracy itself, will have a very long shelf life in the history of the world. Hopefully someday it will be looked back upon as an unfortunate but necessary hiccup in the progression of the human race.

Democracy was built for morons to rule. The people electing the leaders are morons and they will often choose one of their own.

Funny how EVERY generation has its share of people who think the End is Near. And yet, we go on, day after day and generation after generation. In _any_ time period you can find some problems which, at the time, seem serious enough to be a threat to our long-term future. But somehow, we humans manage to be just clever enough to make our way past those sets of problems, until a new set of problems captures our attention and causes us to wring our hands.
