My roommate (who I hate) left a bunch of food and sweets locked up in his room for 2 months while he has been away. I opened the door and there were probably thousands of little bugs that fly around all over the food and sweets that he left. I assume they are called gnats, but I'm not for sure if that's what they are. How do I get them OUT?!

CALL THE EXTERMINATOR! THATS THE ONLY WAY.

Open a window and put the food outside the window. The gnats should follow the food out the window. After a few hours, close the window and set up a bug zapper and leave it on for a day or two. You can also run an air conditioner in the room to dehydrate the bugs. They can't last long without water or humidity.

Calling an exterminator should only be the last resort. He is going to fill the air in the room with toxic chemicals. Don't use Raid unless you like the fresh lemon scent of toxic chemicals.

First step, get rid of the food source. Take it all out of the house and throw it in the trash. Next, get an aerosol flying insect killer (Raid or whatever) and spray it in the room according to the instructions. Then seal off the room (close all windows and doors) and just wait a coupla-few days. The poison will kill any existing bugs and the lack of food will cause offspring to die off. Then go in and thoroughly vacuum all carpeted areas to remove any existing eggs and dead bugs.

they are fruit flies, ive used these ideas and they do work

DIY pop bottle trap
Find a narrow-necked 2 or 3 liter soda bottle and fill the bottom inch or so with fruit juice, beer, soda, V8, apple cider, or vinegar along with a few drops of cooking oil or dish soap to break the liquid’s surface tension so any bugs that attempt to land will get caught in the liquid. Place the bottle in the area of infestation and watch all of the little fruit flies get trapped in the bottle or trapped in the liquid inside.

DIY Bowl trap
Don’t have any bottles? That’s ok, make this trap instead. Take any size bowl and cover the bottom with fruit juice, beer, soda, V8, apple cider, or vinegar along with a few drops of cooking oil or dish soap and then cover the top with plastic wrap. Poke several small holes in the wrap with a fork or thin knife and set it out in the area of infestation. The fruit flies will smell their way into the bowl and will be unable to escape.
