GM has not been able to make a competitive small car, the only reason the Cavalier, Sunfires could be sold was because of price and deep discounts, the new generation of GM compacts are re badged Korean imports. Even if the Cobalt turns out to be a good car for you (and thats a big IF) you will still lose in the end because they will depreciate quickly compared to something like the Civic or Corolla.

Check a couple things below:
www.nhtsa.gov-For recalls, customer compliants

consumer reports

my father gave me some good advice once if you see a lot of any car on a dealership used lot don't get it . Like if there are 10 cobalt sitting in the lot used it may not be a good choice of car to get.

Check with mechanic. If it a headache to maintain it ain't worth.

I agree with Orange Charlie on two cars he pick. I see too many Mazda on the side of the roads. My husband and cousin were nightmare. Honda would be my pick over a Chevy for two reason: there reliable and they hold there resell value.

Don't get me wrong I love Chevy! Some of them I could do without though.

Carol:
The Chevy Cobalt you speak of is a mid year change from the Old Caviler. Chevy knew they had a heavy hitter on there hands and they wanted to assure the buying public of that.
So a style update and name change made for mre sales.

In fact I have a 07 Cobalt "LS" and i love it 36mpg and 100mph not bad for a 4 cylinder.

I have a 93 Chevy Cavalier coupe stick shift and it is considered a sports car. I think it is the 2dr versions with stick shifts that class them as sport cars and extras that class them as rally sports.

If you get the ss version, than yes. It has everything a person could want. From heated cup holder's,seat's,loud sound system, and the super charger that gives this four banger a huge kick in performance.

I had one that was extremely comfortable and handled well but was the biggest piece of junk! Consumer Reports listed it as one of the least reliable small cars. Avoid it. Go for a Corolla, Civic, or Mazda3.

I bought one last summer, and I love it!! If you can afford better, however, I would recommend it ... minor problems are already popping up.
