other than raking with a heavy rake and a leaf rake then sweeping off the ground, how do Mexicans make part of their yards look so solid ? I love the idea and want to use it.

Does your have a lot of rain? If the answer is yes, good luck when it rains, it wil be like a skating rink when wet if it is clay; if it is sandy or loamy you will have a major mess.
Large parts of Mexico is dessert or semi dessert; very little rain. The soil is likely a clay composition which will harden like concrete after it has been dampened and baked dry with the sun.

Yahoo for (soil cement) it's a good option.
