Because they have won too many championships by buying the best talent. It isn't fair or in the best interest of the game.

It's one thing to be good, and it's another to buy championships.

However, the Yankee teams of old were good, and that's why they have a ton of older fans. They have a lot of younger fans for two main reasons.

1. because ESPN forces the Yankees upon the masses constantly. I mean seriously...... ESPN is ALL about the Yankees.

2. It's very very very easy for the casual "no knowledge" fan to root for a team thats always winning. Real baseball fans will root for their teams. Casual fans will always root for a team that's winning right now.

Over the past few years, the Yankees have been that winning team that casual fans have been turning to... because they don't know any better.

The bottom line is, the Yankees are hated so much now because they have absolutely no interest in developing another great team like the Yankees of old. They're only interest is buying a championship. They're currently ruining the game of baseball with their huge payroll and large contracts. Essentially, they are slowly forcing other teams into signing outrageous contracts, just to try and stay somewhat competitive. Look at the Soriano deal, look at the Zito deal, Zambrano will get a huge contract... and why???? because the Yankees will if they wont. That's why they're hated. Not because they're good, but because they're expensive.

It's precisely because they are so good, that people don't like them. There are 13 other teams in the American League, and the fans of those teams have consistently seen the Yankees beat them.

The reason that people *hate* the Yankees is that they spend way more money than any other team in the league. In fact, the Boston Red Sox (the league's 2nd highest payroll) would have to spend 60% more to match the Yankees' payroll (see link below). Not counting the Yankees, there are only 5 teams that spend more than HALF of what the Yankees spend. Most teams in smaller markets (Florida, Phoenix, Cleveland, etc.) simply don't have the number of fans on TV and in person to make the money that the Yankees do, and their owners may not want to spend as much money as Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner, so these teams are worse simply because of money.

Also, New York fans have a reputation for being very harsh, so a lot of their players are fairly "tough", and may not be as friendly as players from San Diego, Minnesota or Kansas City. Chuck Knoblauch is an example of a very good player who wasn't mentally "tough" enough to play in New York, so some people could see Yanks' players as "cold" or unfriendly.

I think it's a combination of all of these things.

1st off they aren't really good this year

2ND They are only good because there payroll is like 10 times bigger than everyone Else's which isn't fair, because they didn't earn the extra money. That is how they are ruining baseball

3rd media is from NY and ride the Yankees so bad ESPN, Fox etc.

4th Yankees fans for the most part are very cocky and think they are entitled to a playoff spot, like it's just given to them.

5th they have the most bandwagon following of any team in baseball if not all professional sports.

6th they don't know what it is to be a fan unless they have gone through some hard years, not just one or 2 bad seasons.

I don't think it's the Yankees themselves that are hated. It's their fans. In my experience, they are loud, obnoxious and a lot of times ignorant to the fact that their team might not be that good that yearand no matter how much you try to reason with them and back up your argument with facts they just say "27 in 07" It's one thing to be a good fan but sometimes you just gotta face the facts.
Most baseball fans, deep down, respect the Yankees as a team--- it's just those fans that get under our skin.

When you open up the check book a every player you want, does that seem fair? I'm not hating on Stienbrenner, but I love baseball. What is the sport in stacking a team? If you think that is best for baseball and compelling entertainment, then you probably find nothing wrong with hunting for deer at night with lights.

If the payroll of the Yankees was more in line with the average of the rest of the teams, it wouldn't be so fun to hate them. The 200 million plus per year salary just make it funny to watch them flounder.

I don't believe they are 'hated' because they are good, in fact, for the money, they are one of the worse teams going.

Give every team $200 and most will outperform the Yankees.

If your child was going into a competition, say, a soap-box racer and they were told they could spend $25 on parts, but it wasn't a rule and you decided you wanted your child to win, so you spent $500 on parts, well, that's the Yankees.

I don't know that people are jealous, rather that the yankees use their location edge in getting everyone they please.

Your question is the answer, they've won too much, there are a lot of people out there who root for underdogs and despise the yankees big time spending to win championships.

Same reason as when you were a kid and got the coolest or most desired toy. You were hated by many of the kids. Same thing as grown up. If you have an expensive or best car, there will be more haters than people happy for you.
