The correct answer is "it depends on the position". On average the queen is the most powerful piece, but in any given position another piece might be better. Probably the most famous example of this is the Saavedra position - an extremely famous endgame study in which White can win by promoting his one and only pawn to a rook, whereas promoting to a queen would only draw.

Personally, any piece can be the best depending on your situation. Pawns can be the best if you need another back up piece. Knights are useful because of the way they move. Bishops are good for checking and cross board attacks. The king is always most important. The queen is the most mobile and threatening. However it isn't always the queen which the pawn should promote into. A knight could cause a checkmate if promoted depending on the posistion.
It all comes down to the point, there is no single piece which will always be better than the rest.

There is no such thing as "The best chess piece" because all pieces have to die at some point. The queen is the most efficient because it can move in anyway. But all the pieces are handy because they all have their own part. The king I would say the most important chess piece because if the king is captured check mate and the game ends. I hope this helps!

without any other information, the only possible answer :
The king is vital, but the best piece is the queen. (if you lose the "not so good" piece which is the king, you lose the game.. but the queen is the piece that can help you the most ).
BUT.
the real answer to this ( except for the king's part ) is all about the position.. sometime, a rook, a bishop, even a pawn, can be better than the queen...

There's a UK comedy called Bottom, where one of the characters declares Chess imoral, as when a pawn goes all the way he becomes a queen. So there are hidden meanings

Queen, it has such a wide option of moves. But having a combo of a Queen-bishop or Queen-rook is the best. But you need to use all the pieces at your disposal strategically. The whole unit is the best piece(s).

the queen can move in any direction it wants, so it is usually considered the best
the king is the most important, because you need it too win
but i personally like the knights because they have a unique move which is good for a suprise attack, they are sometimes unnoticed by an average chess player, whereas you will always keep your eye on the queen

The Queen is the most powerful, the best piece is the one that gives checkmate.
