On September 3, 1939, Great Britain and France declared war on Nazi Germany as a result of the German invasion of Poland. France and Great Britain had an agreement with Poland that they would declare war if Germany invaded Poland, and so the Second World War began.

For Europe it was 1939. For the US it was right after Pearl Harbor - December 7, 1941 ("a day that will live in infamy" FDR).

it started with the Phony War in 1938, actually hostilities in Europe started in 1939.
The US did not enter the war until 1941 following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
