Direction.
Uploading means you are putting it on to the Internet.
Downloading means you are taking it from the Internet.
So if you have a file that I want you will have to upload it for me to get it and then I can download it.

Very simple question, downloading is when you bring a file from an outside source (internet) to your computer. Uploading is when you move a file from your computer to an outside source. Whenever you upload the original file stays on your computer, likewise when you download the original file remains at with the host.

Uploading is when you take files from your computer and put them on a website or program. Download is when you take files from a website or program and put them onto your computer.
Like uploading pictures onto myspace and downloading music from limewire.

when you visit a website and get a software program to your computer .. that's downloading .... when you go to a website and send your picture to them to post for you .. that's uploading ... basiclly
