I have a riding mower that won't start.

When you turn the key it makes the start up sound but it won't turn over... it hangs right on the edge.

It's a Briggs and Stratton, Model 28R707. I've looked at all the trouble shooting stuff online but I don't know which one I should start with.

Where should I begin?

Pull a plug and check to see if it is sparking. If it is, spray a bit of starting fluid in the cyl and put the plug back in. If it starts a sec, the problem is fuel. Replace the fuel filter, and make sure the gas in the tank hasnt gone bad. If it smells like varnish, drain it and put fresh gas in it. If still no luck, then the fuel pump or carb needs overhauled.

Be sure you check the spark with the plug attached to the plug-wire, I recently had a cracked insulator that was difficult to see, and the spark was jumping to ground deep inside the plug. Beyond that, you need fuel and compression. If you can see into the carburetor you may be able to toss a 1/2 teaspoon of gasoline into the throat while cranking - if that makes the engine fire for a second, the problem is fuel-related. Perhaps something was dislodged during the fuel line/filter work and clogged the carburetor. As for compression, if you don't have a compression tester, you can usually tell if the engine has compression by the sound it makes while cranking - if it's smooth and doesn't sound like the starter motor is speeding up and slowing down, there might be a problem with a valve sticking open.

If it's just clicking and nothing else, check yer battery. There's a lot of safety switches on newer mowers that can go bad, as well. One on the seat, one on the deck, one on the clutch...etc. If in doubt unhook the switches and wire the wires to them together and it will bypass them. If it doesn't start then, the only thing I can think of is yer ignition switch is going bad, but I'd try the other stuff first.

check the gas, the oil, and when you start it pull the choke out then push it in when the mower starts.
