These bulbs are used on rides like the ferris wheel, and on the concession stands, etc.
The look like glass door knobs.
Also, where can I find instructions on how to build my own outdoor sign with bulbs?

Ok. Alot of the carnival ride and concession trailers use turbo bulbs with plastic covers over them. The plastic cover may be the "glass door knob" type you are looking for. Check this link. http://www.actionlighting.com/category.asp?MainCategory=Amusement%20Turbo%20Type

When I was in the amusement industry we ordered from Showmen Supplies. http://www.showmensupplies.com Their website looks like it is under construction. It's been awhile so who knows... There is a contact # on the site if you would like to call.

As for building instructions..... No clue. Creativity?

Hope this helps a little.

I'm not familiar with the bulb you're describing. All I've ever seen in carnival setups is a standard 60watt light bulb in either clear or colored glass.

You can get the colored bulbs at a plass like LampsPlus.

Here's source for the sockets that allow you to attach to make up your own string of lights-

I worked as a ride attendant for awhile. The rides are safer than people think. We are all highly trained in the assembly of the rides and we always make sure one person stays sober while putting them up.
