Where and how do you think the coolant travels from the motor to the radiator?

It's necessary to drain the radiator with the cap off. You'll also get a tad wet when removing the lower hose so be sure to drain everything into a large oil drain pan and dispose of the old coolant as per your county / state standards.

The coolant is gonna come out when you take off either of them. It's best to drain yer radiator first. It's just a little wing nut at the bottom of yer radiator. that way you can control where it goes. You'll still have a little come out when you take the hoses off, but not nearly as much.

No, once the bottom hose is off there is no way to keep the coolant from flowing out. Besides, you really should change your coolant on occasion, and changing hoses is a wonderful time to do so.
