I think if you knew this ominous punishment WOULD BE CARRIED OUT without question and there was a possibility of being caught, yes, it would be a deterrent to crime.

In my opinion, No. The punishment is clearly as severe as it gets. However, the uncertainty of receiving it, and the long delay after the decision to commit the crime make the punishment's deterrence much less.
Some have argued that a very tangible punishment right after a crime is best, even if its not as severe.

I know some people on here will completely disagree but Yeah, I think if we went back to public hangings or some form of PUBLIC punishment where people can clearly SEE what will happen, then I think crime would go down. Currently, we hide criminals away in prisons where 1) we pay for them to live, watch cable, exercise, etc and 2) we don't have to look at them and therefore, not gain any lesson.

I doubt it. People will do whatever they want. I think crime would go down if the idea of swift & certain punishment was in peoples minds. But jail/death is a long way off with our legal system being backed up. But, I do like the thought.

Most research indicates that probability of being caught has a greater bearing than severity of punishment.

You betcha!!! And that way we don't have to wait 40 years for someone on death row to finaly get his just 'dessert.' I don't know why we don't go to something drastic like that. Maybe not lions, but firing squad, something that'd happen the second you were convicted. I would go for that.

Probably not, most people who commit crimes often don't think of the punishment because most of them believe they aren't going to be caught.

Not at all---Capital Punishment is barbaric & the most civilized countries on earth have banished it from their legal statutes.

doubt it. the people commiting the crimes don't care about punishment. at least while they're commiting it. and if they do think about the consequences, they don't believe they'll get caught.
