I just recently bought a 1993 Mercury with only 84,000 miles on it. The car is clean but the odometer is only five digits so I was wondering was there anyway to tell that this car didn't go over 100,000 miles and just started over... Is it actually 184k instead of 84k

You may be able to get a car report like from carfax.com which will tell you when maintenance was performed.

The likelyhood is high that the car actually has 184k on it. If you bought it from a truthful owner, the title should have the actual mileage (as of the last time it was titled) and if it's over 100,000 miles it should be branded 'Exceeds Mechanical Limits' (over 100,000 miles on a 5-digit odometer that can only display 99,999 miles). There may be a sticker on the inside of the driver's side door frame stating previous mileage as well.

I don't believe that there really is a way to figure out whether or not the odometer has rolled over....However I would assume that it has....If you take into consideration that the car is 14 years old, and it was most likely a daily driver since its not a luxury sedan or sports car.... So you may have unfortunately overpaid, but hopefully the car lasts for a while and it won't hurt you in the long run.

Is the drivers seat worn out? How about the floor, any holes? If a car has real high miles, it will show wear and tear.
