XP is supposed to mean expert. So Windows XP is considered Windows Expert.

Windows 2000 is based on Windows NT which is the source for Windows XP. The NT platform was meant to be used by corporations on their networks. Windows 2000 was written on the Windows NT platform. So the "expert" part comes from the fact that the software can be used by businesses and corporations. But, this is only true if you buy the more expensive professional version that has all the networking options enabled.

Windows Vista is a horse of a different color and an attempt to get rid of DOS. Windows 3.1 and its later versions were meant to be an easy to use interface that would tell DOS (Disk Operating System) what to do. But, up until Windows NT all the pervious versions needed DOS to work and were just and easier way to use DOS. With Windows XP and Vista Microsoft is trying to get further and further away from DOS. The idea of Windows Vista is that DOS is no longer needed. It might still exist, but only as another method to run the machine, not as the primary method.
