First of all, most chat services do not reveal your IP address. The only one that I know of that does would be IRC (Internet Relay Chat.) Avoid using IRC if you are not familiar with securing your PC.

And to answer your question, No they cannot find your address. At the most, once an internet user knows your IP they can find out the location of the Internet hub you are connecting to. This may be in your city, or country but will not reveal your full area code and address to a person.

To find out what information they can see, simply find out your own internet address first. One way is to go to http://www.whatismyip.com/

Then, form another PC, go to Start -> Run and type "cmd" to bring up a command console. From there type "tracert xx.xx.xx.xx" where xx.xx.xx.xx is your IP address. This will show you a listing of the Internet nodes between the other PC and your machine. The nodes will usually contain location information within them.

Hope this was informative.

Regards,
Boris

Yes and no.

No - if you just have a consumer DSL subscription with your provider then you don't have to worry.

Yes - if you have a business DSL or leased line with routed subnet, then its possible to do a WHOIS based on your IP address and figure out who owns the IP address whether its a company name or a person's name. Its a bit of detective work, but it is possible.

No, IP is only your computer. They would have to talk to your service provider to get your address. And your internet provider protects your rights, so unless it's the cops you're chatting with, don't worry.

No. Your IP address will lead to the hosting computer unless you are hosting on a computer in your house and that is so complicated that you would know the answer already.

No, unless they somehow go through your Internet Service Provider. They can often find the city and state or region, though.

no, basically all they can really do is use a tracker to find out your state or area for instance if you lived in Manchester, England, that would be all shows up on their screen when they try to trace you, nothing to worry about.

If your ISP gives your account info to anybody but the police then they should be crucified. You are pretty safe, unless you are dealing with the police.

No, they'd have to talk to your ISP, and they'll never give that info.
