The "All-Star Game victory assigns World Series homefield" policy didn't begin until 2003. Prior to that, the WS HFA was simply alternated every year (1994 was a skip year for an obvious reason), which was a method dating back decades. Under that plan, 2001 happened to be an NL year.

2001 was two years before they made that rule that the winner of the all star game gets home field advantage. before then, they alternated homefield advantage year by year and in 2001, it was the NL's turn to get home field (arizona). and in 2000, the AL got home field (Yankees) and in 02, the AL got it again (Angels) under the alternating rule. since 02, home field has been in the american league team in the world series and won it in the all star game starting in 2003 with blalock's hr in the midsummer classic. the new rule wasn't in tact yet.

2001 was before major league baseball implemented the home field perk to the all star game. I think the all star game in 2002 that ended in a tie caused the rule to be brought about

That was before the league that won the all-star game had home-field advantage, which sucked for my Yankees. Neither the Yankees or Diamondbacks won a game on the road, but the Diamondbacks had home-field advantage that year, and we all know how that turned out.

Because MLB only adopted that policy after the debacle in Milwaukee when the game was called in extra innings with a tie score. That was in 2002, so the 2001 WS wouldn't have been affected.

Making the All-Star game "count" , didn't happen until after the 7-7 tie in the 2002 All-Star game. It is there to put importance in the game.
