This would probably be a very expensive project. A 2007 3.6L engine from the factory should be in the $25-35k price range. And the price will go up since there is a substantial amount of support items needed to go with this (I would not expect the '89 DME to adequately work with the new watercooled unit, and would also plan to redo the oil cooling system as well as add the radiator).

Because of the cost and side issues to such an upgrade, you will have problems finding anyone that has already done this work, and thus you will need to pay all the fabrication and development costs for parts needed to fit the new engine into the car... bottom line, I would expect that your final cost to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $70k-80k. In short, you would most likely be better off simply purchasing a new 3.6L 997 as the price would be just about the same (and it would also have all of the other advantages of 20 years of engineering improvements).

If the primary issue with the '89 Carrera is cooling, you would be better served looking at adding additional cooling capacity. A different front bumper/spoiler that could hold a large external oil cooler along with a larger external oil cooler would probably take care of most of the problem... at least when the car is moving. A larger or additional fan on the primary cooler (or the external one as well) for low speed or stop & go driving would be a good add on.

If you are set on a water cooled solution, you would be better off looking at an engine from a 986/996. The 2.5L Boxster engine would be the least expensive option, though much of the work mentioned above for the 997 would still apply (but in the end, a total price would probably be closer to $25k for everything).

If you are looking for more power as well as better cooling, you'd find it cheaper to look at the 964 or 993 3.6L engine, and also add the previously mentioned cooling upgrades. The engines themself will prove less expensive, and as these are faily common swaps, kits with all needed unique parts are available from various sources.

horribly expensive. New 911 engines are VERY expensive, as in alot more expensive than the car youre buying.

A better choice would be to buy a 911 between the years of 1999 and 2007. 996 models (1999-2005) are rather inexpensive. Cheaper than a new 3.6l watercooled motor.

also, the air cooled motors are pretty dang good at keeping cool. They did just fine in racing for years. As long as youre not stuck in standstill traffic for long periods of time, it will be fine.
