The word "percent" means "per hundred". So, a percentage is simply "parts per hundred".

If the basketball player makes 3 out of 7 shots, their percentage is 3/7, which equals 0.4286.

To convert this to a percentage, you simply multiply by 100:

0.4286 = 42.86%

Remember the "%" sign really means "divided by 100", so you can think of 42.86% as being "42.86 / 100".

A player made 3 shots. She took 7. Therefore, she made:

3/7 = 0.4286
0.4286 x 100 = 42.86%

It is easier to understand if you use a different example. Let's say she made 5 shots out of 10. You immediately can see that she made half the shots, or another way of saying it is 50% of the shots. Here is how the math goes:

5/10 = 0.5
0.5 x 100 = 50%

To figure out percentages you have divide the number of things made or done by the number of possible.

so in this case, the player made 3 shots so that gets divided by the number possible or done which is 7.

3/7 = .43 which is 43 %
