Visit their website:
www.gvb.nl (that's NL)
just over the GVB you'll see where you can click ENGLISH
It's easy, has maps, schedules, address seraches, etc.
When you get to Ams. Centraal Station, walk out front and head across the tram tracks towards 10 o'clock, you'll see a sign GVB
Go in there and either buy a "Strippenkaart" (A card of strips to ride the trams, buses, metro)
Or, I usually buy a few days' pass for however long I'll be there. Then I can get on and off and not count strippens.
They'll also give you free maps, and ask for the night buses too.
Good stops to start looking around would be Dam, Muntplein, Leidseplein, or Prinsengracht

The trams in Amsterdam usually have both a dot-matrix display and a loudsqueaker announcement that tell you the name of the next tram stop. If you really can't cope with the trams, use the metro: you can't go wrong.
