i try to stay at the Doubletree or Homewood Suites. They are usually a little bigger than the average hotel room.

For cross country ROAD trips, I like the Holiday Inn Express chains.

1. Coupons for discounts are readily available from AAA and other auto clubs. More are available from those free magazines that are found in racks outside of most truck stop and roadside diners.

2. I find the rooms, themselves clean and as well appointed as most full service hotels.

3. They all have pools and laundry rooms.

4. The room price includes a VERY good Continental Breakfast with a good variety of breads, cereals, juices, sweet rolls, fruit and fruit juices. This is a great way to start the next leg of a long drive, without having to make an extra stop and expense of going to a restaurant for breakfast.

There are other chains that offer similar services, but, since our first experience with Holiday Inn Express was so good, we found no reason to change.

We've had good luck with the major mid-range chains -- Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn. The Country Inn and Suites are relatively unknown, but we've stayed at a couple of really nice ones.

In all cases, the rooms have been good, and the free breakfast in the morning is a nice treat.

I refuse to stay in any establishment that is connected with Cendant (howard johnson, ramada, super 8, etc). I used to work for the company and have heard TERRIBLE things from customers.

We prefer to stay at the Radisson. We always have a great bed (sleep number!) and great service.
