In 1998 there were just over 20,000,000. This site, http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/PEOPLE/injury/research/TrendAnalysis/2_chip.htm will give you statistics relevant to growth and % of population with projected growth to 2010.

That was the latest information I could find in a quick search.
