If you were allowed to be the judge over the Straw parents (the Nevada couple who neglected their kids (22mo & 11mo) for video games)--what kind of punishment would you inflict? Any? Why/why not?

Unusual situation.
I find many young people (early twenties) seem to be relatively neglectful or selfish when it comes to their (unplanned) children. I saw my older brother neglecting his first child simply because of laziness and self obsession...
loathing more like.

At any rate, I know of many MANY people who are addicted to WOW and GW, prior to that it was UO, D2, W3 and CS.
It is like drug use. They waste so much time on these games.
My brother calls our other brother asking him to log on and tell his friends on WOW that he will be late but not to start the "Raid" without him.

It is like another world for these people, where they can live out a fanstasy existense with other people.
To many it is easier to live there than here. They feel more important and capable.

This seems very much like an addiction, disease or disorder.

And yet it is encouraged that we all find some kind of method to distract ourselves from the bigger picture as this world is falling apart.

How do we punish them?
Who's job was it to teach them how to behave and what responsibility is?

Im willing to bet that both learned this behavior from their parents in one form or another.

As much as I feel for the children, I too feel for the parents, because they are a part of me.

They pleaded guilty. They know what they did was wrong, which implys they regret. Rehabilitation would be nice.
Or how about proper teaching of our children to begin with, so that when they get older they can be better members of society.
The cost of living requires both parents to work in many middle class households.

What time is left for the children who are forced to attend school for 70% of their childhood and yet are never taught how to live?

Who among us can say we have done no wrong?
And who among us will be brave enough to stand up against such as this with good intentions to make things truely better for all?

they neglected their children for video games that is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. I know it is not legal in this country but i would neglect them the same way they did their children. I would let the cats go to the bathroom on them and not feed them. this story made me so sick i cried while i was reading about it. there are so many people who can't even have children and want them so badly and these people keep the children they obviously don't want. why not put them up for adoption so a family who wants kids could fulfill a dream??

Tough one, If I were a judge, I think I'd have more details. The punishent should fit the crime, so i think Ulitmately I would like to deny them of their basic needs. I suppose jail would do that well enough. Are there other relatives or would kids go to foster system? Sterilization is also an option, but as far as I know the US doesn't do that. hmm.. good question.

The fact that they blame the neglect of their children on video games is total BS. I'm a hard core gamer, but it's only games and you have to take care of important things first. That's called being an adult. I would nail them to the wall with the maximum possible sentence.

I would do the same thing to them as they did to their precious children. I would starve them. I would also enjoy tasering them up their butts. Then, I would enjoy shoving a hand grenade in their mouths and blowing their sickening heads off. They were playing Dungeons & Dragons! They are stupid people and I hate them.

Put them in a cell devoid of anything ---color, books, paper, and see how they like being totally ignored.

I don't understand why there is an objection to sterilization. If a person abuses his/her child, he/she should not be allowed to have any more. Why run the risk of more abuse?

Of course jail time, and sterilization. period. People who endanger their own children once should not be allowed to have more.
