Hi, the ac on my car is not working. We got it fixed (filled or whatever) about 3 weeks to a month ago, and they said it seems to be holding pressure fine. But now there's no cold air again. What could this be and what would be the cheapest fix? Are used parts an option? Thanks alot for any help you may have!

I HAVE BEEN IN THE AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR BUSINESS FOR OVER 35 YEARS AND SPECIALIZE IN A/C AND HEATING SO LET ME EXPLAIN A/C REPAIRS TO YOU SO THAT YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING. YOU SHOULD GET SEVERAL ESTIMATES BUT REMEMBER THAT A GOOD REPAIR SHOP SHOULD CHARGE YOU FOR CHECKING YOU’RE A/C SYSTEM COMPLETE AND IN MOST CASES IF YOU GET THE REPAIRS DONE BY THAT SHOP THEY WILL CREDIT THE CHECK OUT FEES TOWARD YOUR REPAIRS.

EXAMPLE OF COMMON PROBLEMS WITH A/C LEAKS ON GM VEHICLES IE: COMPRESSOR CASE.

TYPICAL JOBS OF THE CALIBER CAN RANGE FROM $750.00 TO $2000.00 DEPENDING ON THE VEHICLE YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL BUT USE YOUR COMMON SINCE AND NEVER TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THEY WILL IN EVERY CASE ALWAYS JUST PATCH IT AND YOU WILL BE BACK AND UPSET.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE DEALER WILL DO WITH A LEAKING AND NOISY COMPRESSOR, THEY WILL REPLACE JUST THE COMPRESSOR AND RECHARGE THE A/C SYSTEM. THAT JOB WILL MOST LIKELY COOL BUT WAY BEFORE THE WARRANTY IS UP THAT SAME COMPRESSOR WILL START MAKING THE SAME NOISE OR WORSE.

DO NOT CUT CORNERS BY TRYING TO SAVE SOME MONEY BUYING YOUR OWN PARTS AND THE REPAIR SHOP SUPPLIES THE LABOR EVEN THOUGH THE PARTS MAY BE WARRANTED FROM YOUR SOURCE FOR WHAT IS KNOWN AS “LIFETIME” THIS MEANS NOTHING IF YOUR PART FAILS. THE REPAIR SHOP WILL NOT REDO THE COMPLETE SYSTEM FREE BECAUSE THEY DID NOT SUPPLY THE PARTS.

IF THE VEHICLE IS IN GREAT SHAPE AND YOU PLAN TO KEEP IT FOR MANY YEARS THEN ASK THE REPAIR SHOP THAT YOU PREFER NEW PARTS INSTEAD OF REBUILT PARTS IF AVAILABLE FOR THIS REPAIR.

NEVER USE USED PARTS TO REPAIR THE A/C SYSTEM, MOISTURE IS WHAT KILLS THE A/C AND MOST OF THE A/C PARTS OUT THERE IN SO-CALLED SALVAGE YARDS ARE FULL OF MOISTURE AND ALL THE VACUUMING IS THE WORLD WILL NOT REMOVE IT.

Any time you have to add freon to the A/C it means the old freon leaked out somewhere and they should add dye to the system when adding new freon. At a later date they can hold a black light on it and look for the dye leaking out anywhere along the system.

It could be just a line connection or the condensor coil damaged by rocks (in front of ther radiator) or the evaporator coil or the compressor. The dye will reveal where the leak is.

Good luck!

There is a small leak somewhere that is letting the coolant out, most likely a hose, or a fitting. Change them, get it recharged and you shoulds be good to go

Take it to someone who knows what they are doing, not the corner gas station. Don't just fill it, fix the leak first.

You could take your car to another mechanic or get another car.
