Equality is an empty promise sold by politicians who would never allow themselves and their own families to be brought down to our level financially.

I don't believe in a Harrison Bergeron type of society either. Remember the book? Harrison was above average intellegence so he had to wear a helmet that put off a high pitched noise every so often to keep him from thinking more. Then there was the pretty girl who had to wear a mask to cover her face. When is equal equal? We all have the right to a high school education. Some people don't even go that far. We all have the right to be employed as long as we can fulfil the requirements of that job. We do not have the right to take from a successful person because they have become successful.
BTW my friend, you speak of equality and republicans, but it was the southern democrats who were in favor of segregation, least you forgot George Wallace, democrat governor of Alabama.

I am a Republican and I didn't know we wouldn't say that.
In fact, I don't know any Republican that wouldn't say that.
Here, let me help you out,
"As a Republican I am for equality for all, in all aspects of American life".
is that OK?
I'm curious! When you ask "why" are you positive you're talking about equality or do you mean redistribution?
If this is indeed what you mean a good source of reading reference is the story The Ant and The Grasshopper.
I hope this helps you out.
I thought John posted an interesting comment.
Interesting because it causes me to ask a question.
John's comment:
"Equality is an empty promise sold by politicians who would never allow themselves and their own families to be brought down to our level financially."
To me this is interesting because I'm wondering what it is that won't let allow you to bring yourself and your family up to their level.

The Republicans do not believe in equality! The party is about different things today than it was throughout history, but I don't believe they were -ever- about equality.
The Republicans are the minority party. The minority party can only win through getting their people excited, getting them to come to the polls. To do this, the Republicans create 'wedge' issues, issues that stir people up and set them against each other in a way that helps them.
Several of these issues have to do with intolerance. Illegal immigration, affirmative action, womens' rights, etc. The Republicans are the ones who encourage almost every kind of intolerance--racism, nativism, homophobia, religious intolerance, etc. etc.--as a way to get people angry and set them against each other.
But most of these issues are issues they don't really care about, they are only ways to get their voters excited.
For instance, for decades Republicans made a big deal of illegal immigration, mostly from Mexico. They set people against Hispanics by pushing for English to be made our 'official' language, advocating a fence along the border, etc.
But in the last few years they've realized that Hispanics are a larger and larger percentage of people in the West and Southwest, so now they're trying to reach out to them. Also they don't want to stop illegal immigration because they want to cheapen labor, keep wages down, and a large pool of illegal workers keeps wages low for everyone.
So now Republican voters are angry with their party for trying to pass an 'amnesty' bill to allow more immigrants to become legal.

I can't speak for all, just myself.
I do not think equality of outcome and equality of opportunity should be the same thing. We all have equality of opportunity, but some are driven to succeed where others are not. To give everyone the same benefits regardless of effort made I think destroys the human spirit.

Then we would not have a 2-party system.
The French gave us the Republic.
The Greeks gave us Democracy.
So the majority would rule, almost like free-market.

Hard work and laziness should never gain the same reward. That works in a socialist nation but not here. I guess that makes liberals socialists.
