People do not like Nigerians due to generalizations. There are a lot of scams that happen having to deal with Nigerians. At the same time Nigerians I are not all rude and it is sad that people have such experiences but I feel as if I want to become rude and bitter to people from certain places because of a couple bad apples. At the end of the day people can form their opinion on just a few circumstances and I will just say tough luck life goes on. Not all Nigerians are rude or scam artists not all Latinos are illegal and do not speak English ,and not all Muslims are suicide bombers or hate America.

Many reasons.

Westerners mostly have their "experiences" with Nigeria through the 419 scam, which originated from Nigeria, but now such scams are perpetrated (through Email) from numerous countries.

Cheated people then of course get a bad association with Nigeria.

Another aspect is that Nigerians used to be used as "mules" in the drug trade. Many got caught and thus ended up in prisons overseas. The drug trade then started to transit through Ghana (where wholesalers were nicknamed "pharmacists"), and nowadays drug mostly transit through Guinea Bissau.

Nigerians clustered abroad, e.g., in Johannesburg, locally get a bad reputation because their means of survival mainly appear to be petty crimes.

If you ask (black) people from West Africa, they'll tell you that Nigerians are "rough". This is also true. Nigerian are harder and less polite than other people along the coast (Liberia and Ivory Coast have "roughened up" due to the civil wars).
Within Nigeria, people from the Niger Delta have the worst reputation.

As for my opinion on the matter:

Ever heard of the Nigeria Scam? It is called Nigerian scam for the reason most of the people who commit this fraud are from Nigeria. This promotes the image that Nigerians are nothing but thieves and con-artists who cannot be trusted. Stop allowing this to happen and it will turn around for the better.

For actually meeting Nigerians, I had the privilege of dealing with them on a daily basis a couple years back. Due to these dealings, I formed the opinion they are rude, greedy and have no idea of honesty or respect for others. I am sorry however that how these people actual acted and this is what I learned to expect from them due to these experiences.

*SCAMMERS*

**I got myself in trouble with another user for continually saying 'scammers' to a question like this. He said that i shouldn't generalise, especially when it comes to the fact that i am part Nigerian [like him]... but i cant help it! I HATE people that con and scam and Nigeria is the 'Queen of Scams' ALSO past experiences have made me very bitter towards them!**

**The country is a beautiful place, shame about (some of) the people! **
