to force the secessionist movement back into the Union? Can a state secede because it is being treated unfairly by the Federal government, be it for economic, social, or other concerns?

The only problem though mckenziecalhoun is that the Civil War was not just about slavery alone, there was also an issue of unfair taxation that was being applied to the Southern States, and distributed to the Northern States. Shouldn't the individual state be allowed to express and defend a concern for its residents?

Bold answer East Coaster! Lincoln would have been in big trouble if the South had taken a more federal approach to redress.

No it doesn't. The South made the wrong move in the Civil War. Instead of arguing with Lincoln when he demanded they return to the Union, they should have agreed and then impeached him on grounds that he acted outside the scope of his office.

Legally Lincoln had no leg to stand on.

States no longer have the legal right to secede. Unfortunately, they can be forced back into the Union.

Lincoln set the precedent pretty clearly: Just say NO to secession.... or we'll beat you over the head until you do.

It's called ignoring democratic principles.

Vote, and then when you don't like the vote, quit.

Play Monopoly, and when you lose, toss the board.

Its called treason.

Yes, they do. They have the same powers any state has. If they lose a vote and quit, they have my contempt and that of the nation.
