I didn't specifically ask for suspense, Lauren B., but thanks. I think I'll try a few of yours. (Come to think of it, though, Peretti does do a lot of suspense...)

All by Cornelia Funke:
The Thief Lord
Inkheart
Inkspell

were all AMAZING books. Inkheart and Inkspell sound right up your alley, but the Thief Lord is an awesome book, too.

Those are the only ones I could think of because I read things like Gossip Girl :]

I'm in my fifties, but I am also an Honors English grad from a prestigious college. As a teen, at another good Prep School, I remember being utterly entranced by, "Ethan Frome". This short novel, novella, has it all----romance, life and death, black humor, subtlety, brazenness----you name it! It is at once "in your face", and at the same time gentle, ironic, laid back. Quite a piece. I recommend it, and I guarantee that you will enjoy it.

* Turn off the computer
* Go to the public library.
* Go to the section called "Young Adult".
* Pull some books out
* Read the inside of the jacket covers
* If the story sounds good, check it out.

Its completely free. Hope the steps are easy to follow.

A really good one, sort of branching off from those two authors, would be one called "Queen's Own Fool" by Jane Yolen

I like Ann Rinaldi books. She has really good books. They are historical fiction, but they are all about teens dealing with problems and they have good action. My favorite is "Time Enough for Drums."
