Local newspapers is the number 1 way. Yard signs. Signs directing people towards your home from main roads. Signs with your address on them. You can try Craigslist (not sure on how much it will help but it is free). Some communities have city wide yard sales and such, find out when your is and have your yard sale on the same weekend.

Some newspapers have a section FREE. If not, it's not expensive. Use your address. Use a brief description of items as below. Wednesday may be the deadline.
You need plenty of signs with arrows and time. You don't need your address. Let the signs be the guide.
Place several along a main road in both directions, with arrows pointing correctly.
At turns within the two main arrows.
Then at any intersection for turns from both directions to reach your yard sale.
Make a large sign at your location.
If by chance you have sparse selection, toys, tools, houswares, furniture, clothes etc, you can have your neighbors participate. Tag each item with the price, bearing in mind that you will reduce them at times. If neighbors are in, use different color tags.
No matter what time you set to start in AM, be sure there will be early arrivals.
You'll find that the first are usually people from flea markets. They will be tough on pricing as they expect to re-sell.
You must pick up all signs each night and reset each AM. Keep a record of locations. Do not locate signs on private property or utility poles. Un-owned trees OK. Use posts that will push into ground, sharpened.
Get busy, you have lots to do before weekend.

1) Go through your local paper--you can usually pay for paper and online postings.
2) Figure out your times and your dates.
3) Put up signs in local stores--grocery stores, delis, church, etc.
4) Put up yard signs. If you are located in an odd location, try to move to a better location by asking a friend or family member who is RIGHT on a major fairway.
6) Be sure you have enough stuff! I've seen so many garage sales that have very little stuff that's being sold, that I wonder why the heck they even tried.
7) Look at when your town holds an annual city/neighborhood-wide garage sale. You'll get free advertisement.

You need signs and word of mouth.
You can also advertise online. A good site is: http://www.yardhopper.com
You can design and print a Yard Sale sign @ http://www.yardhopper.com/sign.php
Good luck!

ooo! My friend, my mom and I made up quick signs out of construction paper basically saying yard sale on (date) at (time) and we had arrows pointing to how to get to the house. As you got closer my mom was the one who drew up really nice signs pointing towards the home and then at the home. So, my friend and I took up the quick signs and went to hang them up at the streets and we had to make sure the arrows were pointing to where they needed to go. Think of all the different ways that you can get to your house and advertise it that way. Make sure you start the yard sale off early in the morning, we did it at 7 am because a lot of people like to wake up early and hunt for yard sales.... I donno if you have a walmart near you, but we had signs pointing from an intersection of walmart leading to our house. It took a while to hang up signs so we made sure we did it at night because the cars would be going everywhere in the streets and we didn't wanna make anyone cash in their insurance. :) WE had a really good turn out, it was steady and we probably could have made more money if it didn't start raining... People really don't buy clothes, but they like gift items and things like 4 for a dollar kind of things. Good luck!

in the newspaper, they will give a discount the more times you run it and they usually have a special section in the classified designated for garage sales. plus if the newspaper has a website its posted on there as well.
put signs up around your neighborhood the day before your sale. this is good for those who see your ad in the paper and are not good with directions.
i work for newspapers and you might not be too late. call right away and they probably can sqeeze you in for friday.

Since you've waited too late to advertise in your local newspaper or IWANTA classified ads, I'd just go to the hardware store and buy several signs that are already mounted on legs that can be pushed into the soil (since so many cities have ordinances against taping signs to existing poles like stop signs and street lights). Write your information on them and post them at strategic locations!
Have fun!

Have Big POSTERS on the corner of a street light where the red light lasts FOREVER. That way, the people are bound to see it.
