I live in an apartment, so I expect to hear noises b/c of the thin walls, and I'm not one to really imagine things, lol.
I heard this startling noise last night about 9:30. The noise itself sounded similar to I guess if a woman with an lower voice moaning. It went down in pitch and lasted unnervingly too long. But what creeped me out was that it clearly came from the small hallway to my left, lower to the ground than I was.
Startled, I looked over to see what the hell it was, and my cat's head was already turned towards the hallway (apparently startled as well). Nothing was there, I left b/c I was so shaken, and went to ask my neighbors around me if they heard anything. Only my neighbor below me was home and he didn't hear anything, nor was he watching television. I've convinced myself that maybe it was my a/c or something so I can sleep lol, but I still get this chill when I think about it.
Ever heard anything that completely freaked you out??

Well, at least you aren't jumping to the ghost conclusion. That is a start. They only way you are going to figure it out is if you go in and investigate and find what made the noise. This will probably mean waiting to hear it again. Keep track of when you hear it and about where you hear it.

Also, just to be safe, check all of the closets and rooms in the house and make sure there is not someone there you do not know about. Kind of paranoid but hey you can check the place in less than 10 minutes, why not do it?

Another note, get a carbon monoxide alarm in your place. I have read of a few unexplained noises in homes being caused by hallucinations due to carbon monoxide. It is always a good idea to get a CO alarm anyway.

You had an idea of where the sound came from. Go in that area and check things out well. Are there air vents in there or plumbing? Also, consider the age of the place. Older houses make all sorts of creepy noises.

As for being freaked out. Something has challenged your perception of your place being safe. Your natural instinct is to avoid unsafe places. Do you have pets? They have very good instincts. If there was something wrong with the place then a cat or dog would be very agitated. Don't worry too much about it. Sleep with the lights on for a few nights if you need to. Don't do something silly and try to sleep with a weapon. There was a story just recently about a person who shot herself in the arm with a pistol she slept with.

Now as for hearing something that freaked me out. I grew up in the country and there are lots of critters out there that make some pretty weird noises. A screech owl will definately freak you out. There is even a type of owl that sounds like a woman screaming. That will get your attention. Today, the one that gets me is when a neighbor in the apartment slams a door while I am sleeping at night. It will sound like my front door has been closed. That will wake me up and I usually spend a few seconds trying to figure it out before I realize it was a drunk neighbor getting home.

Yes, quite so. I live in an old apartment building and ever since I was a small child I remember the pipes, heaters and even walls themselves creaking and moaning from time to time. At night it always used to scare me, but I've gotten used to it. The way I see it is this: there are innumerable thing that go bump in the night, and it's far-fetched to believe that of anything it could be between the walls and halls of a building, it is in fact a ghosty or ghoulie. Don't worry so much, souls and specters rarely hang around these days, more likely the sounds you heard are being caused by something technical or electrical or all-together natural. Sleep tight, and don't worry, there's nothing there at night that isn't there in the daytime =]

I promise!

oh my goodness. im not lying here. last night i heard something eerily similar. i live in a 4 story house in a subdivision in apex, north carolina. last night, around 11:45 ish, i was falling asleep, everything off, lights, tv, computer, parents asleep, little brother asleep. i heard what sounded like an older woman (and i mean older) with a super low voice just moan. it probably lasted around 10 seconds, but it felt like forever. i was frozen stiff! it seemed to come from the downstairs floor of my house. below the staircase of my house there used to be a room, but they blocked it off with sheetrock, and when you bang on it, the room is hollow. the man who used to live in the house killed his wife. this was about 12 years ago and i heard the sound last night!! creeped me out soooo much. it used to be a guestroom. thats about all i know. im only 13 and ive watched liek every scary movie there is, so i am at times paranoid, just knowing someone died in my house. so yeah. there you go.

hmm...

one time I was in a business meeting, and I heard a low grumbling sound coming from my chair... when I stood up, I noticed other people must have noticed it too- cuz they were all looking in my direction with their noses wrinkled...

They must have been rationalizing it too- cuz they all said I did it.
