NO! You can submit your manuscripts to publishers on your own. It can just be easier if you have an agent to do it for you. But, remember, the agent will take a cut of whatever you make!

You can do it yourself! Technically, you are an author as soon as you write something. But to be published is the goal of every author.

Just make certain that you copyright your work. An easy way to do that is to put a copy of everything you have written for whatever story you are working on in a big envelope and mail it to yourself. DON"T OPEN IT EVER! If someone takes your work you can take the envelope to court and have the judge open it to prove it was your idea first. This is called a "poor mans copyright"

To publish in the big houses like Random House, HarperCollins, Doubleday, etc. you are going to need an agent. Big publishing houses only look at work submitted to them by agents. For smaller publishing houses, you don't need an agent. If a small publishing house agrees to take you on as a writer, you will need an agent when you sign the contract.

NO, but it certainly helps because A List publishers do not accept unsolicited manuscripts. They only deal with A List agents. You can always go to smaller publishers without an agent. Pax - C

Nope. You can undertake the task of selling your work to publishers by yourself. Once your work is picked up by a publisher, it's in their best interest to promote it.

Another option is self-publishing, which would involve even more effort on your part because the only one who will promote it is you.
