stuck on paper mario thousand year door?

the part where mario is on keyhaul key island and the mario and luigi statues are there. and you jus put in the skull diamond in the skull rock. and your supposed to hit the statues a certain amount of times and everytime i do the fire ghosts appear..idk what to do!

I had the same problem. The thing is that you're not supposed to whack the red one with your hammer, you're supposed to spin jump on it. Whacking the other one is just fine, though! Hope that helps!
