When pronounced correctly (Ahl-ma), it is a very pretty name, and it is Spanish for "soul," which is nice. However, Americans will screw it up and call her (Aaal-ma), which sounds to me like a fat old lady who works as a crossing guard. So it's risky.

I like old fashioned names. Alma is a nice change from the thousands of Alyssas and Hayleys.
Alma looks good in cursive.
Would you use that as the first or middle name?

I know a lady who is approaching 90 and her name is Alma... but those older names are making a comeback... come up with a cute middle name and see if it grows on you.. It isn't really that bad of a name.

Sounds like a sweet name but also like an old lady's name. Still pretty though.

Beautiful... as long as people pronounce it correctly (soft A as in All-muh, not hard A as in AL-muh).

I feel the same way about the name Elanor - if you pronounce it correctly (Ella-nor), it's beautiful... but if you pronounce it like 75% of western Pennsylvanians (Ell-ner), it's ugly.

For? A pet? A girl? A boy?

In general I like it as a girl's name.
