North Las Vegas is basically split into 2 parts, the old section and the new section.
Generally, the old part of town is due north of downtown Las Vegas, north of the 95 freeway and extends east out towards Nellis AFB and west a few miles from I-15. I would avoid this area at all costs as it has some of the worst neighborhoods in the Vegas valley.
The new part of town is north and west of downtown LV. Basically anything north of Cheyenne Ave. and west of Martin Luther King Blvd is all new and for the most part pretty nice. The further north and west, the newer the neighborhood.
I hope this helps and good luck on the move!!

I used to live in N. Las Vegas off of Simmons St. Over by the Texas & the Fiesta. It was a pretty rough Neighborhood. My Father and Grandparends live off of Decatur & Smoke Ranch. It seems to be a little better there. Hope fully this helped. Also if you need to see if there are any Registered Sex Offenders in the area you are looking to move... go to WWW.Familywatchdog.us This will show you where they live, work, and how close they are to the school zones. Good Luck!
BTW : I only lived in vegas for a few months. It was just bad for me to handle.

I would NOT recommend living in north town.... but honestly Vegas has the number one crime rate and car theft, doesn't matter where you live here either...I'm in Summerlin which is supposed to be high end and my brothers car just got stolen two days ago. My husbands car has been stolen 9 times and mine was broken in to once before...... be prepared!

Newer NLV is fine. Avoid downtown NLV such as the area of Lake Mead and Civic Center. As well as Owens and Eastern.
Talk to a realter they will show you the good areas in NLV.

The North Side is ghetto. Lots of killing and dangerous stuff over there don't recomment it.

Parts of it are very nice, especially over by Summerlin.
Parts of it are very UNSAFE - the old parts by Washington and Lake Mead Blvd. and Eastern - do not go anywhere near there!
