If a company provides health insurance benefits for an employee's gay partner, how is it determined who that partner is? Since there is no marriage contract, do you just say so and so is my partner? How often can you change partners? Couldn't a dishonest employee say that he has changed partners every time an uninsured friend needs medical care?

here in arizona I have been looking to see if they recognize domestic partnership and have found nothing, however when I started working here at my company...
being a HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY ITSELF. Most people have heard of UNITED HEALTH GROUP and for their employees all I had to do to get my long time girlfriend insurance was prove that we have been living together for over 6 months and show that we have joint interest (bank, savings, stock etc.)

It all depends on the policy of the employer and the laws that maybe present in the state in which you live in. I live in Texas which does not recognize any kind of domestic partner. My friend who works for Shell Oil Co. has to show proof (ie a lease, mortgage or utility bill) that he and his partner have been cohabiting for 1 year in order to receive insurance.

I can answer this one....it may depend on the State and the Insurance company, but usually a Domestic Partnership Agreement has to be filed on record.....that's what we had to do.

yes an dishonest employee could put under his insurance some friend, but he still would have to pay for it, so is not like he is getting anything for free.

In Canada you have to prove that you have been living together. And my pertner and I had to go to a Notary to get a legal document validating us as common law. She shares my medical and i get to fly under her benefits at Air Canada....

It's not easy... but it is just the same as a hetero common law couple....

In Canada, years ago, before marriage was allowed we had to have a notary draw up a legal document that we were actually common-law. I think it still applies to common law couples (I'm talking about Canada).
