The Irish don't study their mistakes and make improvements, they stick with the same old formula by suffering through consequences.

It is a stereotype of the Irish... meaning they are constantly focusing on things that are "wrong" or negative.
However, if you know anything about northern Ireland, you would understand why the Irish are constantly dealing with something wrong. They have been fighting a religious war for decades....even centuries. Car bombings, attacks, fighting, and mayhem have ruled Belfast for as long as any Irishman can remember.... and will continue most likely.... so, there will, indeed, be "something wrong for the rest of his life..."

All that meant was that Irish people are strong willed, like...."he's irish, he can take it" What it meant was that he won't be depressed about it forever, he'll just deal with it, he's strong. He was taking an Irish stereotype and exploiting it.

we irish are not outwardly emotional. we like to bottle things up and keep on going about our buisiness. instead of sharing our emotions we get piss drunk. it's just the way it is.
