The Ring, The Omen (Orignal), The Excorcist (Original) Jaws, hell even Silence of the Lamb. One of those a guarentee you will get you going.

First of all, I want to thank you for renting and not downloading. I'm getting so sick of seeing people on this site asking for hand outs!
Now, to answer your question: you could always go for the classic horror films like The Exorcist or Poltergeist. Crappy special effects, but they at least get a couple of spooks out of you!
Today's "horror" films just try way to hard. The only ones I would recommend from recent years would be anything by M. Night Shaymalan (or however you spell it!)

The Ring was the first movie in decades that was suspenseful and made me afraid. Definitely worth a try.

Not overly scary, but very clever - Frailty. It is such a good movie with a great ending!

edit: Nice ^
I really enjoyed "The Descent."
Good claustrophobic terror.
A little gory, but not excessive Tarentino style, like that hunk of junk Hostile.

It sounds like you want suspense more than gore so I would go with Seven or the original Alien.
