how to make those stringy yarn marionettes/puppets?

I went to the flea market and there was a couple selling these stringy yarn marionettes with wooden feet. there were many types mostly animals. anyone know what they are called or what i'm talking about?

Like this? If you're an experienced and imaginative crafter, you could knit one and cut out the feet with a jigsaw or bandsaw, but judging from all the web results, I believe they are buying them very cheaply out of China.
