yes that's impossible.Scientists already rejected that possibility recently. As we all know the main reason for global warming is high carbon emissions.

If the earth were getting substantially closer to the sun, or if the sun were growing and getting closer to the earth, I imagine that would cause Global Warming to occur. But, neither one of these things is happenning.

The earth is closest to the sun in January, and yet, in the northern hemisphere, January is a very cold month. This has to do with the fact that the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun in January. So despite the proximity to the sun, it is still cold in the north. The earth would have to move thousands of miles closer to the sun for a noticeable change in the global temperature to occur.

The current warming trend on the earth is the result of more heat being maintained in the earths atmosphere. This happens because the blanket of gases that cover the earth is getting thicker and more dense. As the atmosphere warms, the ice begins to melt. Since the ice sheets usually reflect more of the heat from the sun than the oceans do, and since the ice is turning into ocean water, the oceans are getting bigger and the ice sheets are getting smaller. More heat is being absorbed by the oceans than were absorbed when the ice sheets were larger.

So, the oceans are getting warmer, and the atmosphere is getting more dense with greenhouse gases. As a result, the planet is getting warmer. The Earth is not getting closer to the sun.

The rate at which we are approaching the sun steadily closer is neglible when you compare it to just how dramatic the changes have been within the past 150 years. You might propose this as a suitable theory the we were on a full on course approaching steadily faster. But we are not. In fact, the difference is only notable by one day in every thousand years. No, we are getting closer, but the earth is heating up far too quickly for the distance we still keep. It has to be something internal, which the evidence concludes it has to be the greenhouse gasses we have been contributing from our cars and factories and darned near everything else that requires combustable fossil fuels.

Absolutely not and there is tons of science to show it. Just two points really, the first is that scientists have conclusively shown that variations in the sun (or Earth's position to it) are not the causes of global warming, creation of greenhouse gases by man is. Second that the seasons are caused by the Earth's tilt and not it's position in it's orbit (it's nearly circular anyways). There is no debate in the real scientific community, global warming is real and is caused by man.

If the Earth were getting closer, that would cause warming, but we know it isn't getting closer. The Earth's distance from the Sun is measured and known to a very high degree of accuracy, and it isn't getting any closer.

Seriously, there's a thought. I agree that definitely the closer correlation of the Earth to the sun, would certainly create a warmer setting. However, I know that mankind has "no sense" when we are all living on this planet together. No, I don't think that what you are feeling, is impossible. I hope that all of us here on this world, have a reality check and soon. This pollution attitude must be turned around. Remember this, If God be for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31. The Lord daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. - Psalm 68:19. Peace and God Bless.

Possible but that is not happening. In the pre-historic past, the Earth during the Triassic period (250millions years ago), the solar output was 30% higher than today. That definitely warmed things up. The fact is that as our sun ages, it outputs less radiation.

Current global warming, as most scientists today would agree, is cause by increase of greenhouse gases (mainly, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide).

Goring is not quite correct. The Earth reaches perihelion - the point in its orbit closest to the Sun - in early January today. The date of perihelion does not remain fixed, but, over very long periods of time, slowly regresses (moves later) within the year. But Earth's orbit is very close to circular. The solar flux difference between the seasons incident on earth is very small.

As for the earth receding from the sun -- I don't think this is happening to any appreciable degree.

(Personal Opinion)....How about Global Warming being caused by the multitude of humans that have over-populated planet earth since the first test was taken. Body heat would account for a certain rise in the atmosphere, don't you think?

yes. i realy dont like it when dumbasses answers questions so here is a smart answer.

there earth gose between periods of iceage and... well the hot point were the earth is is close as it gets dosent have a name. the earth is now geting over an iceage so the world is geting closer. but this is not the only reason. green house gasses are helping the world get warmer but green house gasses alone could never cause global warming. many scientists have commented that they knoe this but the average population dosent want to here it. this peice of info is not popular, info can be like trends, so when someone heres it they are not likely to belive it. plus everone who has a hybrid and who has sun pannels on there ruff likes to think they are saving the world.

i would advise people to answers questions they know the answer too. anyways the gravitation of the sun alone is also bringing the earth closer thought it is veary slowly. also the sun is expanding so the sun is geting closer to us to. and as the sun burns through its curent suply of energy it moves on to its next wich is another gas (i do not know wich) wich burns hotter than the last. so there are many things that are effecting the earth that sum up to a great temprature change.

also gravitaion pulls things closer till they touch. gravitation dosent hold something still at a length. a 5th grader would know this. so for the people who answerd this question wrong, as i said, you need to know your info is right befor you answer with it. please remember you are giving other people information that they may take for truth.

Totally impossible because the Earth, like all the other planets actually, is slowly drifting AWAY from the sun, due to the tidal coupling of the sun's spinning motion.

the sun is getting closer, not the earth getting closer to the sun.
