Below is a description from my rental house. Any idea what might be wrong to cause this? Washer used to get cold water OK: Would a plumber or appliance repair person fix this?

It appears my washer is receiving only hot water no matter
what temp I select. I usually let laundry sit in the washer a few hours, but today I did two loads and each in the dryer immediately. One was cold, one was hot, but both came out the same temp - hot.

I have a handyman who does my plumbing well. Do you think he could fix this or should I call an appliance repair person? Sounds like a washing machine issue to me. But do I need my handy man to look at the plumbing first?

No, it's definitely the washer. You can't get hot water out of a cold water pipe.

Are you sure the washer isn't set to rinse all loads on warm? That would make the clothes the same temp at the end.

If you have previously been able to get cold water into the machine and have changed nothing since, it can be a couple of things.

The absolute easiest: Make sure the cold water is turned on.

The easiest: There is a screen in the water line usually where the water hose hooks to the washer. If this screen is plugged you'll get no cold water. The screen can get plugged with sediment that flakes off of the interior of metal water pipes. Turn the cold water off, disconnect the hose from the machine and clear or replace the little screen. It will look like a little hat and will be inserted in the machine, usually, and will be somewhat difficult to pry out. Try to clean it without removing it first since the sediment will be on the side you can get to.

The not quite as easy: There is a solenoid valve that controls the water. The valve is controlled by electricity and the controls for it are what you set on the machine console. Sometimes these valves go bad and need to be replaced. A handyman should be able to do it. These seconds are generally a plastic-looking fitting the hot and cold water hoses directly connect to and usually have to be replaced as a unit.

That's about it. I can't think of any other cause that would stop the cold water.

Good luck.

A screen will normally not just fill up overnight, unless you have a well and it's almost dry and has pumped up a lot of sediment. I will assume that you haven't changed the hoses at all, and that you've been using this washer regularly. The temperature control switch has probably gone bad. There is no way that hot water should be filling the washer if cold is selected. If the temperature switch itself has gone bad though, there is no longer any control governing which side of the water inlet valve is going to let water in.

My advice is to call an appliance repair person unless you're a handy do-it-yourselfer.

does the water run warm during the cold cycle or just not flow at all? our washer runs warm water when it's set on cold, because our water pipes are above ground. We live in a hot climate and the heat of the day heat our copper pipes. So I have to do my laundry at night, when the pipes cool down. or call the repair man.

if you select cold water on your washer and you get hot water, it means the valve is shot on the washer, a washer dude can fix that for about 100 bucks with service call,

if you want,, chance the hose on the back and dont do hot water,, Meaning put the cold water into the hot input

Sounds to me like the filter screen on the inlet valve is clogged with rust or other sediment. Turn off the cold water valve, then take off the cold water hose from the back of the machine. There is a screen that is in the inlet valve where the hose connects. Clean that out and you should be in business.

Could be as simple as a clogged filter (screen) in the washer inlet or the solenoid that opens for cold water is broken. Let your handyman look for clogs first before calling the appliance repairman.

Remove the cold water hose from the washer at the back and see if its just clogged with something and then select
cold/cold on your washer and if you get not water, replace the water valve. If you get hot water then the electronic temperature card is probably defective and its easy to replace. http://appliancequickfix.com/ will tell you how.

I would check the cold water line, I mean unscrew it from the machine and see if you can get water out of it. If yes, call an appliance repairman, if no, call a plumber.
