Minimum wage varies by province but is usually between $7.00 and $8.00.

However, if you are in a position that earns tips (and a bartender will), they are subject to a lower rate (about $1 less), and must declare a certain percentage of their salary from tips on their income tax forms.

Before making your decision to come here, make sure you know the costs involved, such as cost of living (food, rent, public transit), and where you may have an opportunity to get hired for a bartending position.

You might also want an alternate job that you can get to start off with that you can do during days, since bartending is often only available Tuesday to Saturday nights and you may not get the hours you want to start off (such as only being hired for 4pm to midnight on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday).

The minimum wage is $7 in Alberta and going up to $8 in September. The economy is booming so tips should be good, and wages better than the minimum wage. On the other hand, a booming economy means higher expenses.

All this would be based on your ability to work in Canada as it doesn't sound like you are Canadian.

In Calgary it's $7/hr. You'll most likely make at least $20/hr in tips though.
