My daughter is having her first period. She started 2 days ago. The first day wasn't too bad but last night and today she has soaked through x-large overnight pads and her clothes several times. Is this normal for the first time? I can't remember it being that heavy.

It could be normal for her. Some girls have very heavy periods. If it keeps up, maybe she should go to a doctor to make sure everything is okay "down there".
I know she's young, but tampons might help.

You might want to talk with her pediatrician. If it doesn’t slow down by tomorrow, or she starts to show signs of anemia take her to the ER.

Find out if your mother, mother in-law, sisters, etc has trouble with heavy bleeding. It can be hereditary.

My doctor put me on the pill very young to control my bleeding. I was getting anemic and passed out at school because of it.

As a heavy bleeder, I use a tampon with an overnight pad as back up. I bleed through the tampon within an hour my first two days, and as soon as it leaks I replace it. The overnight pad has saved many clothes. She might be a bit young to start with tampons, so you’ll have to take her teachers aside when school starts and explain why your daughter may have to get up and out of class every hour during school. It will be easier for you to talk with her teachers, and the teachers will take it better too.

As far as night time. It is not reasonable to expect her to get up every hour to change her pad. Get a good mattress pad to protect her bed. You can pick up some bed liners as well to protect her sheets. Just go to a medical supply company and get the ones for incontinence in geriatric patients. Make sure she goes to bed with a fresh pad, and you wake her up first thing in the morning to change her pad, even if she is going to go back to bed.

Also have her keep a change of underwear and pants with her at school. I know that I had many days while in school that I ended up in my gym clothes due to an embarrassing accident. As an adult, I keep a change of clothes in my car for the same reason.

hey... just relax....!!
it's different for every body.... depending on each person's body and the activities they perform and their internal system.
it's pretty normal to get heavy bleeding on the 2nd and 3rd days. but if it's combined with severe pain too and she finds it unbearable, u must consider a trip to your Doc. she may have to change her pad about 4 times or more a day during the 2nd and 3rd day. it's fine
don't worry too much...!!

take care.....

Of course! You really should talk to her about wearing a tampon, I can't imagine a period without it! And I am only 13!

YOU NEED TO TAKE TO THE GYN. THEY WILL KNOW IF IT IS NORMAL FOR HER BODY TO BLEED EXCESSIVELY.
