So the Chief Medical Officer believes that organ donations should no longer be voluntary but should be automatic if we do not opt out of this scheme.
Who the Hell does this man think he is.
Only one person has rights to my body and that is me.
Sadly this arrogant buffoon is only too typical of a profession that so very often puts itself undeservedly on a higher plane than us mere mortals.

I am not entirely sure what I think but I do have a lot of sympathy for the view that there should be a presumption of consent for organ donation. That way, if you feel strongly about it (and apparently you do), you can declare that you do not wish to do this.

It would remove the effect of apathy on the availability of donor organs. If a person does not make a decision on this in their life, it is left to their next of kin to make a decision - with no guidance on the deceased's wishes and at the worst possible time. It's not surprising that many families do not give consent in these circumstances.

Your body ceases to belong to you when you cease to exist. So your wishes expressed before death are only a guide to what you wanted. Your next of kin has the job of giving (or withholding) consent.

Perhaps you would feel differently if you knew someone who lived with illness, perhaps with the spectre of death in front of them, or with regular dialysis. The lack of donor organs is a major issue.

It might be time to think about the implications of something like this.

I agree that a positive election should be made before organs can be harvested. However, if you are dead you are not using your organs. You could save the life of another individual by donating your organs. I'm not saying you're being selfish to prevent that from happening, but what good do dead organs do to a dead body? Make the world a better place by allowing someone else to live.
