That depends on the type of league you are in and how often you are allowed to set your team. Yahoo fantasy baseball has head-to-head and points and lineups can be changed daily.

Head-to-head - I like carrying extra starting pitchers because they usually only pitch once a week and I can put in the pitcher that is pitching that day. This will bulk up the pitching stats and almost always get more wins in those catagories than someone who doesn't make those moves.

Points - Points leagues only allow a certain number of games or innings played so the head-to-head strategy won't work. I carry a balanced team in points leagues and use the players that are playing best.

I like to have 1 or 2 max position players on my bench because they play everyday so there usually isn't much substituting.

The rest of my bench spots are filled with pitchers. I like to have 2-3 closers and maybe a setup man. Starting pitchers are good to fill bench spots because they only play once every 5 days and can be substituted accordingly.

I choose to have 4 relief pitchers and 5 starting pitchers. The rest can be offense. You can have more of less of each, but its usually the pitchers who you struggle with more than the hitters.

I generally carry the bare minimum of position players, maybe one extra, and the rest as starting and relief pitchers. If I have high strikeout good win producing starters, i load up on low WHIP low ERA relief pitchers.
