The people who are abusing the term the most are the ones who know the least about it. They tend to lump anything that is popular today as emo. Incorrect. Also, Elmo is probably more fun.

This can be blamed on MTV and the media. They handed out the term emo because of their looks. But somewhere in the middle, someone misinterpretted emo lyrics as being negative and from there on, people have proceeded to call unrelated stuff emo, like November Rain, Creep, and Gone Away...just because of sad lyrics...
Blame it on MTV and the media. People always said they corrupted people...and it has already.

Yes EMO is a genre of music and the term is over used by teenagers. In the old days you were called a POSER if you wore punk clothes or dressed punk, but didn't listen to that genre of music.
