Do you you have a wireless router connected to the computer downstairs? If so yes you can setup a network to your computer.

Others seem to have addressed the technical and ethical issues. Here are the legal issues.

Is it your house or your parents' house? If you are the one paying for the internet connection, you cannot "steal" it. It's yours. Set up a wireless network, and have fun.

If it's your parent/guardians' house/internet connection, then it would be stealing. However, your odds of facing legal prosecution are low. If your parents catch you siphoning net access to your room, they will probably not press charges. They are more likely to ground you/take away your computer/etc.

However, if you already have some probationary status (such as you are a foster child with a criminal record), you are more likely to face legal trouble. If you have a criminal record, your guardians may turn you over to the authorities. However, that would be difficult and probably expensive. They'd still probably just take away your computer.

You can steal your own internet. You can rob a bank. You can break into a building. There are a lot of things you can do.

The real question is not what you can do. You have already told us about your ethics - or in your case the lack of ethics.

I am sure someone equally unethical will provide you the info.

By the way, in a few years when you no longer reside at home but have taken up full time residence at the cross bar hotel (you know the one, run by the government, with your room having 3 walls and the forth wall being bars running from floor to ceiling) maybe you will rethink your lack of ethics.

If you have wireless for your downstairs computer, or a neighbor has wireless internet connection with no security, you should be able to get it in your room (unless your room is coated in lead). If you don't have a wireless card in your computer, you will need one of those.

If you have wired internet, you will need a really long ethernet cable. A 50 foot ethernet cable is like maybe 30-40 bucks.

heh it won't be easy to do inconspicuously but you either need a very loooooooong eathernet cable (or w/e) or buy a $50 wireless router, set up a network, and buy a receiver without your parents knowing and they probably will when they see this big blinking box next to the downstairs PC. What you can also do is just buy a wireless receiver and hope your neighbors have a wireless, unencrypted network.

IMO just use the downstairs PC... its not worth the hassle.

You need to get a wireless router and connect that to your modem to set up a wireless network and after you do that you need a wireless adapter for your desktop. In total the router and adapter will cost around 100$ for you.

You probably changed your security from open to WPA or something like that. you could download netmagic and fix it in a few clicks.
