For the 50 lb kid I would just divide by 62.5 which is what a cubic ft of water weighs ie

50/62.5 = 0.8 cubic ft

If this kid has trouble floating in a swimming pool then he is a little denser than water so maybe .75 ft^3

If he can float easily then make it .85 ft^3 because he would be just a little less dense than H2O

I'm just kind of kidding around, you have some good answers from others so I would assume you understand the problem now and can solve it ok

His age doesn't make any difference of course.

The average human has about the same density as water. So, if the 5-year-old boy has a mass of 20 kilograms (median value from a children's growth chart), and has the same density as water, they will have a volume of...

V = mass / density
V = (20 kg) / (1 kg / liter)
V = 20 liters
V = 0.706 cubic feet

Keep in mind that a human's effective volume increases whenever they inhale, making them less dense than water when holding their breath. So you could expect the child's volume to be 5 to 10% greater when they take a deep breath, as compared to when they have no air in their lungs.

Let's make some assumptions. A 5 yr old boy weighs approximately 40 lbs. Since the average human body has slightly less density than water (i.e. we float, but just barely), let's assume that the volume occupied by that 40 lbs is approximately 5 gallons, or 0.668 cu. ft.

1. fill up a tank with water to the brim
2. have the boy descend into it.
3. The volume of spilled water = volume of the boy

i don't know - but a five year old boy should fit under the water in a bath, get some measuring jugs and measure the displacement of the water.

Volume or mass? Five year olds can get pretty loud when they are angry!
