At first we contacted contractors through word of mouth, and yellow pages, to come and give us an estimate on a very large garage. Most of them never kept any of their appointments.
So, I figured ok, I'll place an ad! This way any contractors out there that are in need of work will contact us.
GET THIS! Five kept their appointments, given plans for the building, and NOT one contractor has called us back with an estimate. It has been three weeks now.
What's up??
We live in the South (NC), and originally from Long Island NY. Never has this happened up North.
Isn't it the contractors job to contact us with an estimate?
Why waste everyone's time? Tell us up front if you can't handle the job.
Just curious if I am the only one here that this has happened before.

PS, they all said they would have an estimate within a week.

Move on and continue to get estimates. Any reputable contractor would have gotten back to you by now.

It happened to me with a kitchen remodel. Although it was a small 10x10 kitchen, the items I wanted to have installed were all high quality. I ended up being my own general and getting subs for the flooring, plumbing and electrical.

Check with your local Home Depot or Lowes. They have contractors who will keep their word.

Good luck.

i would keep trying other contractors. their lack of professionalism is an indication of the type of contractor they will be if hired. if they can't even keep a simple appt or type up an estimate ( that should take no longer than 20-30 minutes), chances are they may even ask for a deposit, take off and never come back to finish what they've started. it may take a while to find a good & honest contractor, but they're out there. just keep searching! good luck!

I am thinking that a garage (no matter what the size) is not profitable enough to pull their men off work that will keep them busy for a month or so. They are bidding long term, high profit work.

You might just want to call and leave a message for them because they could have just gotten so busy and havent had time to get you the estimate.
